Research

The Photon Science Institute is a multidisciplinary organisation in which physicists, chemists, engineers and materials scientists share expertise and experimental facilities.

Our research interests are wide ranging and encompass fundamental photon-matter interactions, photovoltaics, photonics, optical and electron spectroscopy and imaging science.

Stephen Church

World-leading researchers from a wide variety of fields are present in the Institute, which encourages fruitful discussion and the sharing of ideas.

Complementing our fundamental research that encompasses topics ranging from advanced functional materials development through to quantum technologies, we also deliver a large programme of applications-led projects.

These support aerospace, healthcare, instrumentation, telecommunications, and areas relating to energy efficient technologies.

Many of these programme are underpinned and supported by our advanced characterisation capability that includes the measurement of ultra-fast electronic and photonic processes in materials, high-resolution and high-throughput laser-mass spectroscopy, and surface characterisation facilities.
